Always, always, place a bench, or save point, or whatever place we start at after death, nearby to the boss room! The boss should be the difficult part. A lesson can be learned by any game developer from this, however. Hopefully I’ll have the patience to see it through and continue to enjoy this delight of a game. My gaming sixth-sense, forged from over thirty years of gaming, tells me that I’m probably in for a disappointment there. My hope is that there isn’t a second form of this somewhere else in the game. Presently, I’ve managed to move past my resentment of the journey to Soul Master and have started enjoying the game again. Either way, it made a difficult boss battle far more difficult than it needed to be and caused me to question whether I wanted to continue with the game. It was enough for me to question whether Team Cherry, the developer of the game, intended for this to be a challenge, or whether it was an oversight that they hadn’t realized would be this much of an issue. Like, throw my Switch out the window, angry. Other times, I’d arrived missing health, because Soul Master’s little asshole friends managed to get in a few good shots on me, which essentially meant I had no chance of winning against the big dog itself. Sometimes I’d arrived to Soul Master unscathed, yet peeved by the minutes long journey back up to it. Needless to say, they’re annoying as all hell, especially when all you want to do is get back to the boss and take another shot at it.Įventually, I was able to defeat Soul Master, but I must have racked up at least fifteen deaths along the way. They relentlessly follow you through floors and walls. You see, Soul Master has smaller cousins that attack you along the way. Oh, it’s true! Soul Master is absolutely twice as hard as any boss that I’d faced before it, but the path to this floating monster after death and resurrection at the nearest bench, is lengthy and difficult. Recently, though, I was struck by a wall of difficulty that goes by the name of (and bear with me), The Distance From the Nearest Bench to Soul Master. I’ve defeated a few of these hard bosses, only dying a couple of times before I managed them, and have been feeling pretty good about myself. So far, I’ve progressed about ten hours into Hollow Knight, feeling like the difficulty level has been increasing pretty gradually, albeit with the occasional difficult boss spike. So, let me warn you Hollow Knight is a hard game! Super Metroid was an amazing game, but I’ve never considered it to be a hard game. That’s awesome! There is one big difference, however, which comes in the form of its brutal, sometimes spiky, difficulty. Sure, there are a few other games that influence this title, but when I play Hollow Knight, I get all the nostalgic feels of playing Super Metroid. Now, having played the first few hours myself, I’m delighted to find a game that harkens back to one of my favorite games from my childhood: Super Metroid. After a little research, I found out that it actually came out a year ago on PC, where it seems to have garnered a crazy amount of praise. I hadn’t even heard of the game before this year’s E3, where it was announced to be coming to the Switch promptly. So, I picked up Hollow Knight from Team Cherry, after reading rave reviews from gamers around the internet. Lately, I’ve found myself gaming on my Nintendo Switch more and more often and it’s made me want to expand my library on the console.
